Centennial Rotary Meeting
For general membership
August 16 th, 2005
Invocation: Mark Gail (I rated it as a 7 out of 10 with one being poor and 10 being excellent. Thought he had to work on his inflection a bit, or should I say his infliction. Hahahahaha!)
Pledge: Marcos Strafassee (Not bad for a foreign guy.)
Rotary Minute and introduction of guests: Kent Ostedgaard introduced our guests, the distinguished district governor, Norris Hermsmeyer and his delightful wife Terry.
Announcements:
On 8/19 th there will be a BBQ social at Tom Buck’s house at 6:30.
We were reminded of the peach sale and that Jennifer has recipes.
Greg Cottrell recommended for the next social the play Beauty and the
Beast, which will be performed at the Country Dinner Theatre. It will be on Saturday, November 19th. The cost is 37.95, which includes dinner gratuity (they must have heard about Jeff Piercy’s parsimoniousness.).
Greg is offering $1000.00 in free printing to the first 15 couples to sign up. Ehhhh, change that to seating is available to the first 15 couples to sign up.
Mark Gale said that next weeks meeting would be a brain storming session to promote membership. He also reminded everyone that on September 20 th, a Tuesday evening we would be participation in a major fundraiser at a tourism event sponsored by the city of Littleton. We will be selling/drinking beer and wine at the event. Mark believes it will be a successful moneymaker for us. The event will take place between 4-10pm and they are expecting 5-10,000 people. It will be closing with fireworks (Frank Loner gets gassy after a few drinks).
Marcos announced that the next Project Cure will be on September 7 th and we need 12-15 members. Friends and family are also welcome. This takes place from 7-9 the first Wed. of every month.
Roxy announced that on September 17 th there would be a World Community Service Seminar. On October 1 st there will be a membership seminar. She also reminded us that an Ecuadorian foreign exchange student would need a host family. He arrived Sat., his name is Roberto Garcia and he’ll be going to Cherry Creek High.
Other announcements: This Sunday will be Ken and Cindy Hope’s anniversary. Monday was Hugh and Karen Vallely’s 24 th anniversary (Now that’s a resilient women). Randy Pote brought back some donations for our auction from Hawaii. Dan Ruparel, not to be outdone brought in some lovely items from Mexico. Roxy read some thank you cards from the students from Smoky Hill High whose trip we sponsored.
Frank Loner did happy bucks: Kent’s daughter is employed at the anthropology store in Park Meadows. Bob Slyter’s daughter is done with college. Marco’s niece in Brazil helped to celebrate Rotary’s hundredth anniversary. Dan Ruparel’s junior croquet program swept some kind of mashuganah tournament in Toronto and qualified for the World Cup. Hugh teased Ken about his 34 year anniversary. Jeff piercy is going to Alaska, so we can all start talking about him again. Roxy’s daughter, Alexa, started her last year of high school.
Speaker: The distinguished district governor, Norris Hermyer spoke. He attended our board meeting the day before and was excited about our activities coming up. He presented the best seller, The Rotary Club Murder Mystery book. It detailed the murder of a district governor.
He discussed the president of Rotary and his theme “Service Above Self”. He also touched on the water and literacy projects that were going on. He wants each club in the district to plan 3-5 year goals. Mr. Hermeyer presented statistics that 60%of high school students were deficient from a literacy standpoint. The fact that six thousand people a day die of water related diseases was also brought to our attention. “Nicaragua, once one of South America’s wealthiest countries is now one of the poorest due to natural disasters”, he said. He discussed the plans that Rotary is undertaking to help them out.
Our board voted instead of presenting Mr. Hermeyer with a coffee mug that we would donate $250.00 worth of books to the Grandby Library that is currently being rebuilt. It was also brought up that Kay’s father had an unused barn he generously donated to hold books while the library was being built.
Marcos won the drawing but to our great relief did not pick the blue marble.
