Greeter--Mark P..
Invocation--Dan R. gave us some wonderful, reflective thoughts
Pledge--Dan H.
Notetaker--Pete

Roxy rang the bell at 7:34 in the "Rotary" place in the lobby

Announcements:

  • Dan H. re-introduced Cliff Dougal and together they shared the information that over $550 in cash and a whole SUV full of gifts were donated to the Denver Children's Home by us and Dan's/Marcos' offices.
  • Roxy announced the proposed slate for next year's Club Board. Laurie Christensen as President and Jennifer Holschuh as President-Elect headed the unanimously approved ballot.
  • Dan R. asked for volunteers for housing Exchange students next February 2-5.
  • The Board meeting will be Wednesday at Pete's bank at 7:15 a.m.
  • Dan H. reminded members about the upcoming 4 District Foundation Dinner, featuring our R.I. president.

Happy Bucks

  • Randy for the successful auction and Frank's excellent performance as auctioneer.
  • Jack gave $5, one for the card the club sent to his wife, 2 for his pregnant daughters and 2 because he knew his daughters were "practicing."
  • Nicole gave money because she was happy she was feeling better.
  • Laurie gave $2, one for missing the Holiday party (where she won the gorgeous necklace donated by Yong) and one as she is looking forward to next year's Board.
  • Mark P. simply because the temperature was above 0.
  • Barb gave $2, one for the new snow blower she purchased and one for missing the Holiday party.
  • Dan H. gave a couple of bucks, one because it was good to see Cliff and one for scooting.
  • Marcos duplicated Dan, for the same two reasons.
  • Pete gave $5, most because he was glad he got to see his sister and take her to our Holiday party and one for Cliff.
  • Frank was $1 happy for Randy's idea of the auction, gave an extra just because it was in his wallet. He discovered another in his pocket and gave it for next year's Board, but said he was a bit intimidated that there is only one male on it.

Speaker

Our own Tex Elam with the subject being "Handicapped Awareness."

He asked members for the definition of "handicapped" and after some answers, settled on one that isn't 100% normal, either physically or mentally. He said that most people with a handicap are embarrassed and try to not ask for help. They just want to be normal and often resent their handicap. He gave examples of how handicapped persons try to be normal or cover up their handicap. Because society does a poor job in accommodating the handicapped, they (the handicapped) need to use more ingenuity in getting around. One solution doesn't work for all people and better standards would be helpful. Tex gave many examples of how he gets around being "legally" blind. That fact was not known by several Club members sitting at the meeting. He shared with us information regarding Braille, a collapsible can and how his education at an academy for the handicapped really helped him. Today many students with a handicap are simple "mainstreamed" and that hurts their development.

Tex, thanks so much for your sharing!

Marbles

Ken Hope had the winning ticket, but unfortunately (ha-ha) drew a clear marble. The pot sits at $623 and the odds are 1 in 47.
