Announcements
- Tom announced that Roxy was under the weather and he was filling in.
- Kent deferred his "Rotary Minute" to Dan H. who reminded us that the R.I. President will be in Denver for the 4 District Foundation dinner on January 20. We have committed to two tables and Dan passed around the sign-up sheet.
- Randy mentioned that the "Invocation Book" will be done by then and one copy will be presented to President Stenhammar.
- Tom said that the Foundation dinner will be considered the Club's January fellowship event. Ken Hope is checking into a date for the Ski train for February's fellowship. Tom and Barbara Buck will "host" March's fellowship on/or around St. Patrick's Day.
- Tex walked around distributing free RTD passes that will expire 12/31/05.
- Pete had sign-up sheets on each table for 3 upcoming Habitat for Humanity projects. Each one of them include opportunities on Saturdays.
- Tom asked members to see Kent regarding King Soopers coupons, an easy fundraiser for us.
Happy Bucks
- Hank for having the chance to play his trumpet at church (St. James) this Saturday. This will be the first time in 50 years that he has played in public.
- Randy for having the Invocation Book to the publisher and with much thanks to Mary for all her work on it.
- Paul for the Bronco win and having to scoot.
- Marcos wished all Happy Holidays and a buck for scooting.
- Dan H. dittoed Marcos.
- Mark G. didn't want to give a buck because he wasn't happy. Jennifer said to give her a buck and he could tell us what was wrong. She took the $1 and moved on.
- Ken for seeing Neil Diamond with Cindy and the Gales. Diamond was pretty good for being that old said Ken.
- (Greg asked if the audience lit candles at the performance. Randy reminded him that nowadays people used lighters and Dan R. said that now audiences hold up cell phones.)
- Pete gave a buck apologizing for missing next week's meeting. TOM INTERJECTED THE REMINDER THAT WE ARE DARK NEXT WEEK!!!
- Tom B. excitedly gave a buck for attending the second meeting re: the upcoming Cambodian trip (instigated by the Parker Club)
- Frank donated for seeing his son graduate from fire fighter's academy in Redondo Beach. He was very proud of his struggling actor and now firefighter.
- Dan R. gave an anticipatory dollar for pulling the blue marble.
Speaker
Our own Hank Henschen with the subject being "Medicare Part D."
Highlights from his talk:
Many companies have come out with programs for seniors to sign up for.
The seniors that already have a supplemental insurance with a prescription co-pay should NOT sign up for anything.
Co-pays are already going up and Hank explained some of the reasons drugs are so expensive in the U.S. compared to other countries.
Tex jumped in and explained his experiences with this and how plans differ so much. He said that this situation is very confusing to many seniors.
Different plans pay for some drugs and exclude others.
He doesn't like when pharmacists are asked for "medical opinions" and refuses when asked because he doesn't have all the information.
Generics are generally as good as the "name brand" drugs, although dosage must be adjusted sometimes.
Drug companies deliberately take advantage price-wise when they recognize one drug working well for something they weren't developed for. (Viagra)
Marbles
Ken Hoopes' ticket was drawn. Since Ken scooted, Kent drew from the bag, with Club members warning him not to pull "Big Blue." Thankfully he pulled a clear one and the pot continues to grow, nearing $700.
