Jennifer mentioned the joy of having four students as well. Tom B. hosted a bunch of the students at his home the first night, along with their host family. At the Saturday night function at Lone Tree Rec. Center, Jeff gave his leather jacket, earned for his prowess at 3-point shooting, to an exchange student who loves basketball.

Our Program
Paul Meadows, one of our fellow Rotarians left home last July and presently is working for the State Department in Monrovia, Liberia. The U.S. is attempting to assist the country in establishing law and order after many years of ethnic fighting and civil war, what they called their World War III. In 2003, a truce was declared. Paul's duties include interviewing people who want to serve in the newly forming military. With most people living in squalor, the $90 a month salary is very attractive. The process is to cull anyone who has had abuse or human rights problems in their past. There are little, if any records available, so photos of prospective military personnel will be passed through villages and also displayed on posters throughout the country.
The U.S. has had a military presence in Liberia for many years for both the Navy and Air Force because of it's unique strategic location. It is very difficult to rebuild a country that has over 85% of it's population that is illiterate. Drugs are a big problem. Liberia exports all it's rubber production to the U.S. Paul lives in a guarded compound in a cottage that looks quite nice. According to Paul, Jodi hasn't seen many of the photos, because they show that his conditions are nicer than he has told her. Many of the slides he shared with us showed bullet holes in the buildings and autos. He is constantly guarded by security. With the newly elected female president, there is hope that the economy that was strong in the '70's may happen again.
Marbles
Fortunately Dan R.'s luck ended with his ticket number being drawn. He collected the automatic $10 and left the pot intact by drawing a clear marble.
