Centennial Rotary Meeting Notes for: Tue, May 16, 2006
Greeter—Both assigned were on the road
Invocation—Tex
Pledge—Roxy
Notetaker—Randy
President Roxy rang the bell at 7:30
Announcements
- Dave Stevens was introduced as our only guest.
- Kent gave a Rotary minute (actually almost 3) and explained how our RYLA applicant had to withdraw, but we will still sponsor a student. Seems that the Greeley Club had two wonderful candidates (twins), but could only send one. We will send the other one, Kent’s daughter, a RYLA graduate said that if the girl came recommended by a certain person at that Club, that no other recommendation was needed.
- Tex said that the City is going to recognize our Club for our sponsorship of the “State of the City” luncheon with a plaque in City Place. This is a departure from their past feelings of placing plaques in the City building. He also gave out fifth anniversary Centennial mugs again.
- Ben and Randy explained the Sox Place food bucket and donation program. Thanks to Frank for bringing the bucket! Members can bring food each week and we will soon develop a theme, i.e.: Mexican one month, Italian the next etc. A suggestion also was made that we can buy King Soopers gift certs and help the Club and buy food for Sox Place. A WIN WIN!
- Laurie sent around a sign-up sheet for the upcoming District Assembly. All board members/directors really should attend.
- Jennifer shared with the Club that we will now work with the Highlands Ranch Club on the Project Cure sorting the third Thursday of each month.
- Roxy told us that Youth Exchange student, Mami Takemura, will be our program next week and play her violin and share her experiences.
- Ken reminded all of this Friday’s Foundation board meeting. The scholarship will be discussed. Barb piped up that our applicant’s letter of recommendation, mailed last fall, showed up in the Club’s post box.
Happy Bucks
- Dan H. gave a buck because Paul wasn’t there and he was scooting.
- Nikki for the same reason.
- Bob S. gave two bucks, one for each of his kid’s college graduation. His daughter from UNM, cum laude and his son, also with honors, from Chapman College.
- Jack gave a dollar because he wasn’t scooting.
- Ken gave a buck, thankful he is still alive.
- Ben was monetarily thankful that his sister’s wedding in Iowa went well last weekend.
- Frank was happy about Saturday’s mini-golf tourney to benefit Inter-Faith Task Force, even though we were short two players. He wouldn’t squeal and lamented that there was no “cart girl” so the three team members did shots.
- Roxy gave two dollars, thankful for surviving two college graduation parties over the weekend.
- Pete gave a salute dollar for Paul and his wonderful work as custodian almost every week.
- Barb gave thankful money, as a car drove into her building in Castle Rock, but no one was hurt. Jennifer wanted more info as their firm is considering a new drive-through divorce window.
- Jennifer then gave a buck for a possible scootage.
Program
Maria Pearson, Inter-Faith Task Force Executive Director.
First off she thanked us for the $1000 donation at the golf tourney. Roxy gave her the check, as one of the missing golfers Saturday had the check.
A wine-tasting party is their other main fundraiser
They were founded in 1964 because government services were only a band-aid for homeless. Homeless prevention is their main goal and $.93 of every $1.00 donated goes to services. They are presently the largest non-government community service organization in the Southeast Metro Denver area.
The following are just some of the services they provide:
Transition housing
Programs for home-bound seniors
Work with the Arapahoe Library District delivering books to seniors
Back to School programs for kids
Food for Learning program in the schools
900 Thanksgiving meals
600 families/seniors helped at Christmas
Marbles
With the winner’s pot at $1386, Jennifer had her ticket drawn. SHE DREW CLEAR! After that drawing, 10 more tickets were drawn and Maria gave out goodie bags left over from the golf tourney.
Please remember the food donation bucket for SOX PLACE. Tuna, Mac and Cheese, chile, spaghetti, soup, peanut butter etc.
The above mentioned are some of the many things they do for the South Metro Denver area.
