Rotary minute - Student Exchange:

Kent refreshed our memory on the criteria to make kids eligible for the program. Rotary needs to have more U.S. students traveling abroad to balance program’s supply and demand. Criteria are: 16 – 18 years old, not graduated from HS, “good ambassador” type personality. Cut off date for next year’s program is October 15. Any referral or questions please, direct them to Kent.

Announcements and activities:

  • Mark Gale gave us an update on last week’s – Wild on Tourism - event’s results. Attendance was superb and the highlight of the event was to have Pete locked up inside the “secure” van provided by Guaranty Bank.

  • Granby Library Project: Kay McCormick is still collecting books for the Library Project. The collection process will change in the future however, is still not defined. Kay will communicate changes as they occur.
  • Hurricane Katrina evacuees - Jennifer Holschuh is still collecting school supplies and other goods for the Hurricane Katrina evacuees. New underwear is the most needed item.
  • Literacy Project: Paul Horiuchi communicated that school principal is defining schedules for the project. Those will be available in the next week or so.
  • Habitat for Humanity: Pete Ablanczy presented the next activity days for the project: Nov 2,3, and 4. Volunteers needed.
  • Project CURE: Kay is still recruiting volunteers for the upcoming meeting on 10/5. She has 10 names thus far. Please, contact her for more information.

Today’s meeting Program

Ed Mattson – Rotarian from Indiana and President of The Linda Mattson Wings of Hope Cancer Foundation

Mission:

  • Transport children for Cancer treatment
  • Cancer research information library
  • Private and donor cord blood banking information
  • Underdeveloped countries hospital relief program

Ed also shared with us new ways to fight cancer.   Stem cell, bone marrow and umbilical cord cells are showing great promise towards a cure and in treatments.
