Centennial Rotary Meeting Notes for: Tue, October 31, 2006

Custodian--Randy, but Paul had it done before he got there.
Greeter--Ben
Invocation--Greg
Pledge--Hank
Notetaker--Roxy

President Laurie rang the bell at 7:30

Kent said no visitors except our speaker and launched into the
Rotary Minute--He spoke about RYLA and that the need for applicants is great. Last year our hard-earned money went to a deserving Greeley student, because we didn’t have one. Kye is in charge of this year’s RYLA applicant process.

Announcements

  • Frank reminded us that next week’s meeting is off-site at SOX PLACE. It is located at 2017 Lawrence and the meeting will start at 7:15 a.m. Although Kent will be at the hotel to meet any Rotarians making up, please plan on attending the meeting at SOX PLACE!! Please show up with a bag of groceries. King Soopers has a bunch of stuff on sale for a buck each, including hot dogs, sausage, peanut butter. Please support our food drive for the street kids at SOX PLACE!!
  • Marc G. reminded us that the Holiday party will be held on December 9 at Heritage Eagle Bend. We will auction off all the "travel gifts" we have collected.
  • Mark Gale shared with us the information about the 11/18 celebration at the Dry Creek Station for the new light rail. We will work in concert with the South Metro Chamber and we will be selling hot dogs, hamburgers and soda. Please plan on a fun and hopefully profitable day between 10-2 that Saturday. Roxy is providing a blue canopy and a Rotary sign. Mark also asked us to fill out a questionnaire about our experience weekly at Embassy Suites.
  • Jennifer asked for volunteers to recommit to Project Cure. We will partner with the Highlands Ranch Club the 3rd Thursday of each month.

Program

Patricia (don’t call me Pat) Fiske, president-elect of the Denver Mile High Club and co-chair of District 5450’s Literacy and Education Task Force, a member-at-large of the District’s Executive Committee and member of the Strategic Planning Committee.

She spoke to us about several different programs focusing on literacy. She also asked for help at the November 4th Career Expo, when Rotary will host 4600 8th graders. Rotarians will meet and greet the students in the busses and work with them as to how to shake hands and handle interviews.

She was introduced to the problem of illiteracy when she traveled to Korea and didn’t speak the language. The drop-out rate of high school students is 30% plus and over 67% of the people in jail are drop-outs.

The Denver Mile High Club is involved in a huge project at Eagleton Elementary in the area bounded by 6th to Colfax, Federal Blvd to Sheridan Blvd. They are teaching the kids and parents the difference between Lizard Brain vs. Wizard Brain. They started out trying to entice parents with free computers, but no one signed up. When they started using gift cards to Target, many signed up. After several weeks, moms told them they didn’t need to be bribed anymore and helped the Club get more moms involved.

Other Clubs are giving out dictionaries, getting money from other foundations and reading to students. She complimented Dr. Scooter and our program at Sandberg Elementary.

Marbles

Rick Morrisey had his ticket drawn and drew a clear marble. Yoo-hoo.

Our attendance is really lacking. Please come back to us you Missing Rotarians or at least make-up. Attendance is part of the requirement for the Presidential Citation that every Club should be able to earn with their eyes closed. The previous is an editorial comment from your newsletter dude.
