Centennial Rotary Meeting Notes for: Tue, November 7, 2006

Meeting was held at Sox Place

Invocation--Doyle Robinson
Pledge-Frank

In attendance were: Frank, Greg, Ken Hope, Randy, Barb, Ben, Pete and President Laurie.

The program was Doyle, the founder of Sox Place.

He showed us a video featuring many of the kids that have been through Sox Place in the past. It was very informative and heartwarming.

One of the "regulars" Debbie then shared her past with us. She is 22 years old, mother of three and came from an affluent family that lives in Estes Park.Poor decisions and a mother that didn’t want to deal with her put her on the streets at 14. She was in and out of the foster system and lived in Texas for awhile. She has taken "every drug you can think of."Now she has gone through rehab and is taking steps to get her GED and a job. She said that Doyle and Bruce at Sox Place have been the only adults to show care, concern and love to her. She believes Sox Place has saved her life and helps out around the place.

Doyle and Bruce showed us around the facility and explained to us the normal day there. Ken Hope stepped up and will be donating a refrigerator. They presently have two mid-sized coffin freezers and a couple of refrigerators. The kitchen has two stoves where they cook for 60-75 street "kids" five days a week. On Fridays, a downtown businessman donates hamburger patties, hot dogs and buns. It is their busiest day.

They have five donated computers that have internet access and e-mail as well. They also have a clothing area where "kids" can get much-needed apparel. Their pantry was very empty. Doyle explained that somehow they always manage to get some food to the "kids" that show up everyday between noon and 4 p.m.

Sox Place has very strict rules governing behavior, language, no gang colors etc. Those of us that made it to Sox Place were very impressed with Doyle and his staff.

Several of us got to talk to Will, a man that credits Sox Place with keeping him alive and making him feel like a human. Sox Place is also a key in his attempt to stay clean.

Hopefully our Club continues its support of Sox Place through continued food, diapers and formula donations. Frank Loner is heading up other fundraising opportunities to benefit the facility.

Editor’s note--There are always circumstances that preclude members from attending "off-site" meetings, but it was disappointing to see only 8 members of the Centennial Rotary Club present at this meeting!
