Program
Asst. Manager Jean Anderson from the retail store, 10,000 Villages.
Jean explained that the company is over 60 years old and was started by a woman in Pennsylvania. She noticed many artisans trying to sell products in Puerto Rico. She brought back a bunch of them and sold them out of her VW bug. She was met with suck success that the company was started. There are now 5000 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada and they work with the International Fair Trade Assn.
The concept is to allow the artisan to earn a decent living and not be worked or crushed by large international wholesalers. The focus is on the environment and work practices that promote human dignity. After reaching an agreement with the artisans, they are paid 50% up-front and the remainder when the products are finished.
It is a Mennonite-based business with the headquarters still in PA., but religion is not the focus of 10,000 Villages.
The location in Denver is at 2626 E. 3rd Ave in Cherry Creek North. The business has been in the Denver area for 25 years and is primarily staffed by volunteers. It is a not-for-profit corporation.
Jean showed us a large array of sample products and at the end, Barb said "maybe I'm not done shopping after all."
Marbles
Laurie had her ticket drawn and we were thrilled to see a clear marble in her hand when she pulled it out of the bag. The pot carries over.
