Centennial Rotary Club Meeting NotesFor: Tue, January 9, 2007 Custodian--Dr. Scooter President Laurie rang the bell at 7:31 a.m. AnnouncementsKent introduced one visiting Rotarian from University Hills that invited us to the Charter night for the DU Rotaract Club, combined with a Casino Night fundraiser. The monies raised that night will be used to send 280 wheelchairs to Costa Rica. Kent’s Rotary minute reminded us all that the King Soopers coupons are available every week and we retain 5% of the proceeds. Please remember to buy your groceries with Centennial Rotary coupons. The date has been set for the third annual State of the City function. It is Thursday, April 19th. We need everyone that day, not only as a seat purchaser, but to help with all the details. Laurie congratulated Ken H. on his new job. Mark Gale gave the Club details on the next two opportunities to work with the South Metro Chamber; Saturday May 5th--Centennial Medical Plaza where we will sell some kind of "healthy" food and alcohol products. The day will include a 5K, outdoor movie/fireworks and last from noon till 10 p.m. Wild on Littleton will be on June 28th. We will sell "unhealthy" beer and wine. The Club agreed by raising of hands to support both events. Laurie asked Barb to explain the first increase in dues in a long time. Embassy Suites has increased our breakfasts again. The Club absorbed the last increase but now must pass it on. Our dues will be $200 per quarter. Cliff Dougal was voted in as an honorary member by the Board last week. Happy Bucks
ProgramStan Lewandowski for the IREA. His subject was the power supplies for the future. The IREA is owned by its customers and occasionally partners with Excel. From 1984 through 2004 they didn’t have any price increases. Prices did go up dramatically after 2004 because of the increase in gas prices. IREA has rejected both solar and wind because of high costs. Although wind is less expensive than solar, because of its lack of consistency, the similar amount of coal based power must be maintained. They have offered credits to homeowners that want to have their own "green" power sources. They offer "credits" to those customers so that it doesn’t affect other customers. When the utility does "make" money, rebate checks are sent to customers. When people move and checks are returned, the interest from those monies are donated to charities. At this point, Stan told us that the $1000 check he dropped in Pete’s hard hat wasn’t to purchase a table at the upcoming "State of the City" event, but just a donation. He told Pete to contact him soon and IREA would spend a grand to purchase a table too!!! Stan said that the most up-to-date emission controls are going in on the new coal units and the old ones are being retrofitted. They are very conscious of global warming, but he did state some facts that contradict what some environmentalist have declared. MarblesStan drew Pete's ticket. With the pot at $509, Pete drew a clear marble.
