Centennial Rotary Club Meeting NotesFor: Tue, January 16, 2007 Custodian--Paul President Laurie rang the bell at 7:33 and was loudly greeted by Jennifer AnnouncementsKent was asked for a Rotary Minute. He had had one but forgot. Our visiting Rotarian and District Foundation spokesperson from the Denver Tech Club presented Barb Medina with a certificate for being a member of the "Penny Regiment." That program is D.G. Frank's attempt to increase Foundation giving. Jeff, our Foundation chair, has also joined and his certificate was mailed to him at home. Editor's note--For just $25 per month, you too can join this pretigious Club and help our District increase the Foundation dollars available to us in three years. Please consider this and contact Jeff for more information! Our A.D. G. Mary Kay was also visiting us and encourage members to attend the Quad-District Foundation Dinner this Friday where our R.I. President will be the speaker. She also told us about the Casino Night and Charter Night for the DU Rotaract Club coming up this month. See last week's bulletin for details. Information on this year's District Conference was passed out to each member. Please join Laurie and many of her board members in celebrating her year as our President. The conference runs from April 20-22 at the Antlers Hilton Hotel. Please plan on attending. Jennifer announced her Board for the 2007-8 Rotary year.
The slate was moved for acceptance by Randy, seconded by Pete and approved. Laurie reminded us that the date for this year's "State of the City" will be April 19 and this year's chair is Jennifer. Tex donated a travel gift from his recent visit to Cancun. It was a two-faced carving. Barb asked for assistance for the visiting GSE team from April 10-15th. Ken Hope passed around a sign-up sheet for the February 25th train trip to Winter Park. Seats are limited, so he must know your commitment by Friday. Happy Bucks
ProgramJohn Finegan--Director of Estate and Asset Services for the American Cancer Society (ACS). He started out as a volunteer after two members of his family were diagnosed with the disease. Both his wife and his (at that time) three year old daughter are survivors. His early business career was with IBM. He shared with us the means he goes about to get money, donations (land etc.) He talks with accountants and estate planners frequently in his territory of CO., UT., WY. and AK. Planned giving is the second largest fundraising tool for ACS. The largest fundraiser for ACS is "Relay for Life." Over 4600 communities hold one of these events each year and over $700 million is raised annually. He told us that funds can be directed and/or restricted to many different categories and that a committee of very intelligent people make decisions on where the monies go. 40 receipients of ACS grant money have gone on to win the Nobel Prize. There are many education programs, navigator programs etc. Some programs are awarded monies, if available. He pointed out that many times the committee wants to award more grants than there is money for. He had literature available to us. MarblesJennifer had her ticket drawn and pulled a clear marble. The pot of $ 543 carries over. The odds are 1 in 53.
