ROTARY BREAKFAST MEETING 02-13-07

Greeter was Dan Hoopes
Invocation by Rick

Meeting opened by President Laurie Christensen

We had a visitor, Elliott Richards (sp?) from the Highlands Ranch Club

Kent Ostedgaard gave our Rotary Minute and explained more about the Group Study Exchange program. This is truly an exchange … where a group from one country comes to the USA , and a group from the USA goes to that particular country. The team usually consists of 5 people, one Rotarian and four people from the community. Their ages range from 24-40 years old. We are hosting a group from China on April 3, 2007… we plan to have them at our regular breakfast meeting, then take them on tour of Centennial airport, then to the Donor Alliance facility, the shopping or a tour of the Arapahoe Sheriff ’s dept., then host a dinner that evening for the group and club members at Greg ’s house.

Laurie reminded us that PDG Talee Crow is next week’s speaker. She will talk about the Rotary Foundation. Please plan on attending and bring a friend.

Randy Pote sent around a list of e-mail addresses of club members used to "mail" the newsletter etc, asked that each confirm the correctness of same. He also reminded us to bring food for Sox Place .

Randy also distributed flyers with details about the Baby Shower that he and his lovely wife Mary are hosting for Ben & Rachel Digmann on Saturday, March 17th, 2-4 pm. This is our Club’s March social event.

A "Dance for Literacy" flyer was distributed - the Northglenn/Thornton Club is sponsoring this event on March 10th and invites all Rotarians to enjoy a great evening and support scholarship and literacy programs.

In conjunction with the Rotary Literacy Month, Paul Horiuchi brought our attention to a flyer about the Book Collection drive during February. Please remember to bring any books you may have cluttering up your house/car/bathroom/office to our meetings for collection and delivery to places where they will be used again!

Laurie asked for a vote whether or not our Club wants to continue for another year our agreement to maintain the open space for South Suburban Rec. District. The vote was positive, and South Suburban gave us two parking passes as a thank-you.

Jennifer announced that a committee meeting for the "State of Our City " event will be held Wednesday, 11:30 to 1:00pm at Greg ’s office.

Ken Hope brought some great gifts for our club ’s next Christmas auction from his trip to San Antonio , Texas . The gifts were appropriately bagged in a disposable "Bull-Sh*t" bag, that included some handling directions for Randy Pote.

HAPPY BUCKS

  • Bryon Mogg - Daughter ’s 3rd birthday party was not all that bad, no really!
  • Randy Pote - Thanks for Ken ’s gifts and to remind everyone of the baby shower for Ben and Rachel.
  • Roxy Hahn - A sad dollar for news that her daughter tore her ACL at school.
  • Rick Morrissey - Sorry to leave early (but he actually stayed for most of the program!)
  • Dan Hoopes - Glad to see our guest from Highlands Ranch
  • Paul Horiuchi - Leave early (surprise!) and for Baby Shower for Ben and Rachel.
  • Pete Ablanczy - He couldn ’t remember (it ’s called "dementia"!!)
  • Tex Elam - A kudos for Rotary clubs gathering thousands of flowers from the Home and Garden show and distributing them around the city.
  • Marc Garfinkel - to encourage the rumor that our guest from Highlands Ranch may be thinking of changing clubs.

PROGRAM

Speaker was Fred Joseph, the chief of the Colorado Securities Commission. He gave us a very interesting talk about securities and the need for their regulation. He began by introducing us to a name that has literally become part of American language … Carl “Ponzi".

The Securities Commission handles many different aspects of regulating, but the most fun part is chasing investment scams. Fred gave us a number of examples of scams through the years, and reported that many of these were perpetrated on church groups (of all things) and of course, seniors. Scammers build trust with a few, and then fleece the masses. A scam artist can usually be recognized by promising: 1) To expect huge profits, 2) There is no risk, 3) Urgency - must act now, 4) Gaining confidence through his message or manner. Pete and Randy acted out a skit of a typical scam deal … Pete was most convincing as the scam artist, but Randy struggled in his role as Mrs. Jones!

MARBLES

Roxy had her ticket drawn and bless her heart, drew a clear marble. The pot of $650 carries over to next week and the odds are 45-1.

Meeting adjourned.
