Discussion

Led by Jen and Roxy, final details for this Thursday’s "State of Our City" function were laid out.  Greg C. was thanked for the table tents and table tent holders.  Specific duties for each Rotarian were detailed.

Happy Bucks

There were none, due to time.

Program

Derek Handley, owner of Water 2 Wine, a winery located at the NE corner of University and County Line.

He mentioned that his Dad was a Rotarian in Littleton, where he was born and raised.

He got into wines from a previous life in the corporate world which involved an expense account and substantial entertaining.

After traveling for over 10 years, he got married and became a father.  Used a contact he had in San Antonio to find the franchise opportunity and chose the Denver area to get started.

The unique approach means he purchases crushed grape juice from over 100 vineyards in over 13 countries across the world.  It is a very specialized type of business that does not compete with the large liquor stores that sell products made by major wineries.

The wine business is run by large corporations and one company supplies over 22% of the wine consumed in the US.

The making of wine has changed tremendously over the years.  One oak barrel costs $900 and can be used only twice.  Nowadays, oak 4x4’s can be lowered into a stainless steel vat and in a shorter time can "oak" a wine.  That timber can be used many times.

At Water 2 Wine, you can taste every one of the 100 wines they sell.  You can taste for 30 minutes and if you desire, actually "make" a batch of wine.  From $290-$450, you can "make" 6 gallons of your favorite wine.  After it ferments, you will come back to the winery and bottle your wine.  They guarantee 28 bottles.

Many of the common preservatives are eliminated in the process used at their winery.  You can also design your own custom labels.  Derek said, somewhat facetiously, the label designer at a winery is the highest paid employee.

He put forth a trivia contest and 6 of us went home with a bottle of wine.  Jen won one because she is the youngest and sat next to Derek.

Interesting points:

17 million gallons of wine is produced in CA. each yr.

The color of the wine is determined by the skin.

White Zin is the most popular variety of wine.

1976 is famous because CA wines beat France’s.

Only 85 calories from an 8 ounce glass--drink up.

Red wine helps prevent heart disease--drink more.

Today’s wines are made to drink almost immediately.

There are over 10,000 types of grapes in the world.

Texas once saved the French wine industry from extinction by giving the French grafts of a grape resistant to an unstoppable disease.

Marbles

Rick had his ticket drawn. A clear marble was drawn, way to go Rick. Next week starts at $864.
