Centennial Rotary Off-Site MeetingOn May 01, 2007 With just 10 members present (Roxy, Kent, Ken, Barb, Randy, Hank, Greg, Jeff P., Jenn and Pete), Tuesday’s off-site meeting was called to order by Pres-elect Jennifer. Roxy brought wonderful Einstein Bagel omelets sandwiches. Very tasty! Roxy did the invocation and Randy led the Pledge. There will be a Board meeting tomorrow morning at Greg’s office at 7:10 a.m. There is no official agenda, so Jennifer hopes members bring ideas for projects in each Avenue of Service for the 2007-08 Rotary year. Kent reminded all about the 5/5 function at Centennial Medical Plaza. Mark Gale is heading up this event that runs from 3-8 p.m. Volunteers that signed up need to be there no later than 2:30. Those who haven’t volunteered can still show up. Some have said that we don’t do enough "hands on" projects, so this is one! Contact Mark Gale for more information. Jennifer said the wrap-up meeting for the State of our City committee is at her office on 5/10. Please RSVP to her. Roxy is chairing our next walk-through clean-up of the Willow Spring area. Those in attendance agreed to a Saturday morning start and Roxy will pick the date. We will start at 7:30 and have breakfast, including mimosas etc. afterwards. Ken had a Rotary Minute and will deliver it next week. He doesn’t like playing to such a small crowd. Pete introduced our speaker and hostess, Maria Pearson, Executive Director of Inter-Faith Community Services. She had to messages. A warm welcome from D.G. Sargent, a board member since 1970 and one from Highlands Ranch member, Judy Rudy, who is currently President of the Board. With a annual budget of 1.5 million, the service area for IFCS is western Arapahoe, unincorporated Arapahoe and northern Douglas Counties. 80% of their client base are single moms. The majority are at 185 % of poverty-level. The building we met in was built in 1970 by volunteers on land donated by Arapahoe Co. Across the driveway to the north is Denver Co. The park, Harmony Park, was built three years ago and is managed by South Suburban Parks and Rec. It is very heavily used by the kids in the neighborhood. There is a "career center" in the area where we met. South Denver Realty Co. donated the 6 computers and there is an updated job opening list done each week. There is a large senior population served. There is a "lunch bunch", transportation to medical appts. and other services offered. Several years ago there was a rash of DUI’s amongst hairdressers and their community service was doing the hair of the seniors. As we began the tour, we went through the kitchen that was recently refurbished by a local troop of Girl Scouts. The raised the money for new countertops, linoleum, appliances and repainted the kitchen themselves. They also reupholstered and painted the kitchen chairs. We went into one of the largest and best organized food banks ever. When they offer clients food, it is usually a week’s worth, hence the ongoing need for food. They also have four freezers and a large walk-in cooler. Last year they did 900 Thanksgiving dinners for families in need. It was suggested that we could do a food drive outside a King Soopers store for several hours on a Saturday and then bring the "fruits of our labor" to the facility and sort it to the correct shelves. A great hands-on project idea! Maria said they presently work with about 10 different Rotary Clubs, several Sertoma Clubs and other misc. groups. No marbles or Happy Bucks this week. PLEASE CONTACT MARK GALE ABOUT THIS SATURDAY’S FUNCTION AND MORE INFO ON WILD ON LITTLETON!!
