Centennial Rotary General Meeting

On Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Invocation

Marc Garfinkel told us of the 1893 World’s Fair where a young architect named Ferris introduced the world’s first Ferris Wheel. As the July 4th holiday approaches Marc reminded us of how fortunate we are to be part of this great country. Later Greg Cottrell seconded Marc’s invocation with, “God Bless America”.

Minus a flag, Kye led us in the pledge.

Announcements

Kent welcomed our guests Assistant District Governor Mary Kay Hasz; her husband, Earl; and their houseguest Tony Betts a visiting Rotarian from the UK.  The club also welcomed Mary Alice and Charlie Jackson back for their third visit. New member forms are on the way.

Roxy announced the Willow Springs clean up on Saturday July 14th with breakfast afterwards at the Potes.  Roxy also distributed personal information forms which she will use to update the club directory.  Please fill them out and get them back to Roxy.

Mary Kay Hasz presented the club with the District 5450 Literacy Award.

President Jennifer announced the July Board meeting on the 11th at 7:10 at Cottrell Printing.  She also encouraged club members to be on the lookout for new members and announced a Presidential Membership Conference to be held in Denver in August.  Club members are encouraged to attend.

Randy Pote announced the Piggy Bank change collection will be at the July 17th meeting.  So keeping filling those banks with all those coins, checks are also accepted.

Roxy presented Laurie with her past president’s plaque and pin.  Then Laurie presented Ken Hope with the club’s 2006-2007 Vocational Service award and Jeff Piercy with the 2006-2007 International Service award.

Speakers

Barb Medina, as the club treasurer, handed out invoices and then gave a classification talk.  Barb came to Colorado at age three and attended local schools including CSU and UCD where she obtained a Master’s in Tax.  She is a CPA and in 1992 started her own firm.  She now owns the 5000 square foot building in the Inverness office park.  Barb has been a member of Rotary and a CPA for 15 years.  She is a past president of Arvada Sunrise and was Centennial’s second president.  She has three grown daughters and six grandchildren ranging in ages from four months to 11 years.  Her large home in Castle Rock is a focal point for entertaining family.  Travel is a passion, she has been to Israel, and a trip to Italy is looming on the horizon.  So Barb is busy brushing up on her Italian.

Marc Garfinkel describes himself as a “functional” chiropractor who likes to help people.  He approaches each patient as a complete human being and designs treatment centering on all aspects of the patient’s life.   He grew up in the Bronx and in the 1960s when his father became concerned about drugs and crime; he moved the entire family to South Florida!  In 1980 he was in Egypt during the period of the Camp David Accords and encountered people saying, “We love Americans”; as part of that trip he also made a pilgrimage to the West Wall in Jersusalem.  A trip to Germany in 2000 reminded Marc that, as a Jew, years ago he would have been arrested for standing on this spot.  Marc and his wife Lisa are very proud of their two daughters; Alexa, who is profoundly deaf, is a mainstreamed high school honor student and Bo, who was adopted from China, is in the gifted and talented program.

Blue Marble

Barb Medina drew number 124 and our Assistant District Governor, Mary Kay Hasz drew a clear marble.
