Centennial Rotary Meeting Notes for: Tue, August 1, 2006

Happy Colorado Day!

Jennifer took charge of the meeting today as Laurie was out. Pete stepped up to be the greeter and Paul stepped up to be the custodian. In fact Randy also stepped up and did the invocation. Where was everyone today?! Kent and Pete led the pledge. And I, Marc Garfinkel, was your faithful note taker. Notice I said faithful and not fateful.

Announcements

  • Kent announced visiting Rotarians: The honorable Mary Kay Hasz our assistant District Governor and Brian Kennedy from Iowa, who is an attorney. But he seemed like a nice guy anyway.
  • Barb introduced Rick Morrisey who was a guest of Frank Loner. Rick had been involved in Rotary in Arizona and Northern California before and is looking to possibly join a club in the area.
  • Roxy made two announcements: She received an email that went out to all of last year’s presidents congratulating them on a successful year of fund raising for Rotary international. We raised $428,438, collectively. When this is “magnified” over 3 years, it can bring a return of $1,311,020 for the people of our community and the world.
  • James made an announcement regarding Macy’s tickets and wanted an update on our sales.
  • Tex and Mark Gale announced that the City of Centennial is having a meeting regarding the Belleview light rail station at 9:00 at the City office. They said other stuff too but it was so complicated that no one really understood what they were saying. Contact either of them if you wish to punish yourself by hearing it again.
  • Bob spoke about the Children’s Home and passed out pictures of the improvements our club and Home Depot made thus far. He said we’re still working on windows.  He and Pete installed the grates that Pete got donated from one of the bank’s customers.
  • Randy spoke on Sox Place and how helpful our donation was in buying food for the kids. He also mentioned that Frank is laying the groundwork for us running a golf tournament next year as a fundraiser for them. In addition he announced that on Nov. 7th our weekly meeting will be at Sox Place and they will cook us breakfast. Randy also announced that the subcommittee meeting for the carnival last Friday was a bust as only two people showed up. He is hoping to reschedule it for next Tuesday.
  • Jennifer brought up: Peaches reminder, the board meeting this Thursday at Pete’s bank (7:10), and that Highlands Ranch Rotary is collecting money to put up a veteran’s monument at the Highlands Ranch Library. They are inviting veterans from local clubs to be a part of the committee.
  • I, Marc Garfinkel, also made an announcement. I sent around a sign up sheet for the Slyter’s going away party. It will take place at the Trail Dust Steak House at 6:30 on Thursday the 10th of August. If you didn’t have a chance to sign up let me know if you are coming I’m trying to establish how much food to order. Mary Kay said she will let our buddies at the Highlands Ranch club know about the party and see how many will come from there.

Happy Bucks

  • Dan- For Mary Kay being here and gave her husband, Earl, best wishes
  • Barb- She’s awaiting her sixth grandchild due on St. Patty’s Day
  • Roxy- Today begins her vacation and she miraculously will not miss any Rotary Meetings! She is also doing much better with her balance issues now that she is getting physical therapy.
  • Bob is getting ready for the packing and moving. He’ll be getting cartons from Jennifer whose husband Robert inexplicably has an endless supply.
  • Ben – He’s happy to be back from Rhode Island where his friend was just married.
  • Randy- For Rick Morrisey our prospective member.
  • Paul- For leaving early. And he had a chance to see the Broncos and feels they will have a great year and hopefully many cavities.
  • Pete- Who had a chance to sample the peaches we are selling and believes it’s a good crop this year.
  • Tex- For the Broncos having a good season this year and he is leaving to see his eighth grandchild. Not necessarily in that order. So far if you’re keeping score he has a two grandchild lead over Barb. Ah, to be old!
  • Mary Kay- She gave an impressive five dollars for her 6 clubs meeting last year’s Foundation goals and that Rick is looking for a new Club.

Program

We had two from our club give classification talks, James and Ben.

James went first and described himself as writer. But more specifically a marketing director for a company that promotes “socially relevant” issues. As a marketing director his job is to establish: What’s the story? Who needs to hear it? And the best way to tell it.  His Father was 6’4” and his mother was 5’2”. They must have made great dance partners! He was born in California and spent years 10-14 in Japan. His family then moved to Montana on a cattle ranch which was a huge change coming from one of the worlds most populated cities. He went to middle, high school and college in Montana. Received a degree in journalism and looked into soft ware engineering for a short period of time and realized it just wasn’t for him. But he did manage to marry one. This marriage didn’t last long. Shortly afterwards he met our beloved Roxy.  They become “roommates” and she gave him dating “advise”.  Eventually a romance began much to Roxy’s daughter’s surprise. They have now been married 10 tears and he had adopted Alexa, Roxy’s daughter, five years ago.

Ben spoke next.  Born in eastern Iowa he was an athlete in school. He went to a community college in Iowa. Then found a job selling high quality jewelry. About this time he met his wife who was going to pharmacy school. He posted his resume online and now he’s with a company called Genworth Financial. He sells different types of insurance but specializes in long term care. He is self- employed and enjoys the freedom compared to working for someone else. He describes long term care as any health crisis longer than three months. Conditions such as stroke, Alzheimer’s, MS, Parkinson’s, cancer and even old age commonly fall within this category. He says many people are in denial about the need for long term care and in fact three out of every five people over the age of sixty will need this type of care.

Marbles

Ben picked Rick Morrisey’s (our guest) ticket. Rick picked a clear marble and we all groaned in harmony.

Ed. Note:  As Marc noted, we were missing a bunch of our Club, including those assigned for duties.  Please make arrangements for another to handle your duties if you must miss.

Please continue to make-up and/or bring a travel gift when you return.  We also need continued donations to Sox Place.  This month’s theme is protein.  Examples are; peanut butter, canned beans, tuna, you get the picture.
