Program

Tami Grove spoke on Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC)

She lost a son at 15 months and started the "Josh and Gus’s Run for a Reason." The series started in Minneapolis and that raised over $200K so far. The 3 races here have raised over $150K and averaged over 1000 participants each year.

SUDC is different than SIDS because of the child’s age. SIDS is 44 times more common than SUDC. There are 1.3 deaths per 100,000 live births. SUDC is a diagnosis of exclusion with no known way to prevent it.

It is unknown if it is inherited and more male then females are afflicted. It is virtually unexplained in medical literature.

Speculation is that a fever and a bump on the head may cause a problem in the Hippocampus (sp?) in the brain. There is no protocol to discover the cause of death.

Tami said that the "Runs" goal is creating awareness and promote research. Dr. Henry Krous from Children’s Hospital is leading the charge. SUDC’s research is now where SIDS was 30 years ago. The deathrate in SIDS has dropped 50% since then.
