Centennial Rotary General Meeting

On Tuesday, January 8, 2008

Greeter: Kye stood in for Jeff
Custodian: Paul (as always set up) - Jennifer (took down)
Invocation: Randy
Pledge: Mark G.
Notetaker: Greg

Announcements

Guests: Phil Zimmerman from Highlands Ranch club

Karli Wurpel (our past scholarship recipient) and "Mom"

Rotary Minute: Andres gave an interesting talk on the highlights of his visit to Villa de Nuevo Laredo in Mexico , and brought back a Rotary flag, and a "kind of like" tray as a traveling gift.

Randy advised the club of the very disheartening news that Mary was diagnosed with cancer again (the third time), and asked that we keep them in our prayers. Mary’s attitude is strong, and she is an inspiration to us all.

Don’t forget to make the District Conference in Vail on April 25-27 if possible!

Foundation Board will meet on Friday, 7 a.m., at the Embassy Suites

Happy Bucks

* Mark G. gave his usual "Presidential Question" - What country out of the U.S. has its capital named after a U.S. President? (Monrovia , Liberia ? - the notetaker wasn’t sure he got this …)

  • Pete - Wish everyone a Happy New Year
  • Andres - For his vacation to home in Mexico
  • Randy - Happy New Year
  • Kye - Had 24 people over for dinner during holidays and survived!
  • Paul - "Scoot" early, and some sport event
  • Hank - same as Paul
  • Laurie - "Scoot" early
  • Roxy - Some sport event
  • Jennifer - Appreciation for our own Rick Morrissey in helping Jenn’s friends that were stranded from skiing and needed place to stay. Also a travel gift of Pasta from Ohio!

Program

Karli Wurpel and cohort (Becky Mitchell) gave a great presentation/talk about the COLORADO WOMEN’S ETHIOPIA PROJECT which was organized to help upgrade water resources and community health in Ethiopia. They were part of a group of 5 women that spent several weeks in the country. Ethiopia is twice the size of Texas and has 74 million people - 50% Muslim / 40% Christian. Most time spent in town of Axum , which is a Sister City of Denver! Lots of pictures of latrines and toilets! Water used per person in Ethiopia averages 13 gallons a day, compared to 200 per person in US (no mention about the climate or technology differences, however). They visited orphanages, towns, homes, and the University. They also were experts in "traveling light" with personal effects, so they could pack and donate much needed items to the people of Ethiopia.

Marbles

Ken H. had his ticket drawn and started off the New Year by pulling a clear marble. The pot is over $500.
