Announcements

  • Visiting Rotarians greeted by Kent
  • PDG Loy Dickenson--Steve Sublick--Marsha Walsh
  • Dan Hoopes introduced his son, Jonathan, who was visiting.
  • Rotary Minute by Kent reminded us that July is Literacy month. He also reminded us that King Soopers certificates are available and that we receive a full 5% for each one. He also informed us that Safeway and Albertsons will accept the certificates. Please help us raise money without any extra effort on your part. We need to double the use, as we buy $5000 at a time!
  • Jennifer announced the kickoff of our annual Peach Sale. Please sell at work, to friends, relatives and all other peach-loving breathing humans. She has order-forms and announcements that you can display in your place of business. Delivery of the final crop will be at the Embassy Suites parking lot on September 8th between 8 a.m. and noon.
  • Pete and Kent recently met with Chris Miller from "Rebuilding America" wants our Club to participate in a rehab project to be accomplished on October 6. Enough members raised their hands to move forward on this project. Kent said that this is a unique opportunity to participate in a project in Centennial. More details will follow from Kent and Pete as we approach the Saturday in October.
  • Ken Hope announced that all members are invited to this Friday's Foundation meeting. It will be held in the lobby area here at the Embassy Suites at 7 a.m.
  • Jennifer passed out small sheets of paper for members to write down an unique fact about themselves. Guesses will take place each week and correct guesses will garner the winner a chance at a "huge, to-be-determined later", prize at the end of Jennifer's year.
  • Everyone needs to bring in their "Piggy Banks" next week.

Happy Bucks

  • Marc Garfinkel started out his weekly collections with two questions, first, which President was a model before gaining the White House and second, which President was the first to be born in a hospital. He urged guesses even if a member didn't know the answer.
  • Randy gave a buck just because he was at the meeting. He also pulled a crazy answer out of his *&#$ and said Ford was the model. Darned if that wasn't right.
  • Ben gave a buck because somehow they had double paid their July mortgage and had extra money. Guess he bought a money order with his winnings while Rachel used a check.
  • Barb paid $5 for her phone going off during announcements (she took the call), but it was good news. Her sister and brother-in-law are ok after rolling their truck in Utah. Thank heavens.
  • Rick gave a dollar as he attended his first meeting in a while. Too much work!
  • Pete gave a buck as he made a dumb guess at the already guessed "President Model" question.
  • Visiting Rotarian Marsha gave a dollar for being happy.
  • Jeff P. guessed Ronald Reagan for hospital birth. Wrong.
  • Dan Hoopes was a buck happy that his son was visiting.
  • Jimmy Carter was the first President born in a hospital.

Program

Jeni Harger and Travis Ning from "Together with the Children", a recently named 501C3 charity that helps "street" children in Puebla, Mexico.

Their presentation was stunted a little as the projectors bulb was burned out. They proceeded with an excellent verbal presentation and answered questions.

The Denver office was opened recently and headed by Jeni. There are 3 million people that live in Puebla and they work with street kids, living on the streets, working on the streets and working in the open markets. Over 95,000 kids work on the streets and 1.6 million live on the streets. Many of them are estranged from unpleasant family situations.

Together with the Children identifies approximately 70 boys per year and their families. They also work with 30 boys and girls that live on the streets and 60 boys and girls that work in the open markets.

The main goal is to work with the kids, get some of them to live in Juconi home and get them straightened out, back in school and slowly integrate them back into their family and home. Sometimes the process takes 3-5 years.

Their success rate is 80% and they have a track record of nearly 20 years.

Their work has been recognized by UNESCO, the International Youth Foundation, the British government, the European Union and the World Bank.

They are working towards getting more "individual" donations, as grant money, especially for Mexico, is drying up. They have worked with several different Rotary Districts and hope to soon work with more. They will have several trips to the area each year and encouraged members to consider going.

More information can be learned from their website.

Marbles

With the huge pot of $49 up for grabs, Barbara drew a clear marble, took her $10 and sat down. Next week the pot will continue to grow and the number of marbles will dwindle.
